Ambitious Plans to Achieve 300 Exaflops of Compute Power
The Chinese government has set forth an ambitious goal to boost its computing capacity by an impressive 30% within the next six months.
During the Global Digital Economy Conference 2024 held in Beijing, Wang Xiaoli from the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology revealed that China currently manages over 8.1 million data center racks.
With the nation's combined processing power standing at 230 exaflops, China is determined to surpass the 300-exaflop threshold by 2025, just under six months from now.
Growth Trajectory and Future Projections
China's recent progress in processing power, growing from 180 exaflops in 2022 to 197 exaflops in 2023, represents a 9.4% increase. This steady growth, fueled by substantial investments and advancements, particularly in generative AI tools, suggests that the targeted 30.4% increase is attainable. However, achieving an additional 70 exaflops in the remaining months of 2023 will necessitate a significant acceleration in efforts.
Industry Partnerships and Technological Innovations
A state media report indicates that Tesla may play a role in this expansion. Earlier this year, Yovole Network, a Shanghai-based cloud computing data center service provider, collaborated with Tesla to incorporate Megapack energy storage technology into its intelligent computing center.
Additionally, Yovole Network is adopting various technologies such as hydrogen energy, photovoltaic storage, and liquid cooling to address environmental and sustainability challenges associated with data centers.
Regional Contributions to National Goals
Ulanqab, a city in Inner Mongolia, is also contributing to this national objective. Transitioning from its traditional livestock industry, Ulanqab now aims to support AI infrastructure by providing Beijing with over 10,000 petaflops of green general-purpose computing power annually by next year.
Economic Incentives and Digital Transformation
China’s strategic incentives for local and international business operations have successfully transformed its economy from being heavily manufacturing-dependent to increasingly digital. This shift is driving the nation’s efforts to enhance its computing capabilities and solidify its position in the global digital landscape.
